4th West Oktoberfest
The celebration of Oktoberfest started in the early 1800s when Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. This royal union was celebrated in grand style with horse racing, a parade, and costume performances from various Bavarian townships. As each year went by, this festive occasion became bigger and bigger until in 1819, Munich declared Oktoberfest an annual event.
It wasn’t until the late 19th century when breweries became more involved with the festival. And the demand for beer quickly multiplied in demand! In 1910, at the century mark of the festival, approximately 120,000 liters of beer were consumed. By the end of the 200th anniversary celebration of Oktoberfest, more than 7 million liters of beer were consumed.
Fall isn’t just a great time for Oktoberfest and beer-drinking, however. It is also harvest season! For several years now, cider has been back on the rise. Naturally sweet, naturally gluten-free, and available in a variety of flavors and styles – hard apple cider is making an appearance at Oktoberfests worldwide, including this one (of course!). Mountain West Hard Cider will have the flagship, Ruby, our session cider, 7-Mile, and the new dry hopped cider, Cottonwood, all available during the Oktoberfest celebrations this year.
Starting Friday, September 30th, 2016, Mountain West Hard Cider and Red Rock Brewing start their own tradition of 4th West Oktoberfest. Celebrate with all natural, gluten-free ciders from Salt Lake’s premier cidery, Mountain West Hard Cider, and Oktoberfest-inspired beers from the award-winning, high-quality craft beer brewer, Red Rock Brewing.
